Compare the four surfaces in our calculator
| Surface | Example budget | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Gravel | £3,000 | Low initial cost, more loose-stone upkeep |
| Tarmac | £4,500 | Smooth, functional surface, fewer decorative choices |
| Block paving | £5,000 | Patterns and repairable blocks, joints need attention |
| Resin bound | £6,000 | Contemporary aggregate finish, depends on good groundwork |
Prices are illustrative national benchmarks for typical installed work. A steep site, weak base or unusual drainage requirements can alter the order.
If price is your main concern
Start with gravel. It can cover larger areas economically, particularly when the levels and base are straightforward. Consider where stone might migrate and who will maintain it.
If you need a smooth everyday surface
Tarmac works well for routine car use, bins and foot traffic. Its finish is practical, though it offers fewer patterned options than block paving.
If appearance matters most
Block paving allows contrasting borders, colours and laying patterns. Individual blocks can sometimes be lifted for local repairs, although weeds and moss around joints require management.
Resin-bound aggregate delivers a more continuous stone appearance. It needs the correct compatible base, drainage and experienced installation to perform well.
Drainage can change your decision
A driveway marketed as permeable should be assessed as a complete construction, not just a surface. If your front garden is being paved over in England, read the planning and runoff rules before paying a deposit.
How to choose without guessing
- Decide the space needed for vehicles and walking access.
- Shortlist two finishes you would be happy to live with.
- Check maintenance, drainage and edge details.
- Use the driveway budget calculator to compare project assumptions before requesting written quotes.
Common questions
What is the lowest-maintenance driveway?
Maintenance depends on shade, weather, traffic and construction. Smooth tarmac and properly installed resin-bound finishes tend to involve different upkeep from gravel and jointed block paving.
Can I use the calculator for concrete?
The current estimator models resin-bound, block paving, tarmac and gravel. Concrete is discussed only for comparison and is not an available calculator surface.
