MATERIAL COST GUIDE

Tarmac driveway prices explained

Tarmac is often chosen for a clean, practical finish without the detailed laying work of block paving. The key cost decision is whether you need a completely new driveway or work to a sound existing base.

Calculate my driveway budget

UK-wide guidance, not an installation quote.

What size driveway are you pricing?

A standard national guide gives the following examples for typical tarmac installations. Actual tenders will change with drainage, access and the base that is needed.

Illustrative installed tarmac driveway prices
AreaTypical UK price
20m²£2,200
50m²£4,500
100m²£7,000

These prices are useful for planning, not an assurance that your project will cost the same. Small or difficult jobs often have more cost per square metre.

Three things hidden in a simple tarmac quote

  • The base: A smooth top coat will not correct an unstable foundation or serious drainage issue.
  • The edges: Concrete kerbs, block borders and transitions to the road or pavement can affect the specification.
  • Site access: Restricted access, awkward slopes and waste removal can change labour and machinery costs.

Resurface or replace?

If an existing surface and foundation are genuinely stable, resurfacing can avoid some full reconstruction costs. If you have recurring sinking, cracks caused by base movement, standing water or major changes in levels, covering the problem is unlikely to be a durable fix.

See our separate resurfacing cost guide for the questions to ask before choosing an overlay.

How tarmac compares with other materials

For a typical 50m² driveway, the cited national examples are around £3,000 for gravel, £4,500 for tarmac, £5,000 for block paving and £6,000 for resin bound. Tarmac may suit people who value a smooth surface and a lower upfront budget than decorative paving.

It does not offer the same individual-block repairability as paving, and it should not be assumed to be permeable merely because it looks porous. For front gardens, consider surface drainage and planning rules.

Common questions

Is tarmac always cheaper than block paving?

The national examples place a typical 50m² tarmac installation below block paving, but different excavation and drainage requirements can reverse that on a particular property.

Can an old tarmac driveway be resurfaced?

Possibly, where the existing base is sound, correctly graded and suitable. Significant defects need assessment before an overlay is specified.
