PAVING & BUDGETS

Block paving calculator and cost guide

A block-paved driveway can be traditional, modern or somewhere in between. Start with the area and installation standard, then consider the details that make one quote different from another.

Calculate my driveway budget

UK-wide guidance, not an installation quote.

  • 20m²: about £2,400
  • 50m²: about £5,000
  • 100m²: about £8,000

Work out the size before you choose blocks

Measure length multiplied by width in metres to get square metres. For an L-shaped or irregular driveway, split it into rectangles and add their areas. Our driveway calculator handles separate measured sections and allows you to select block paving.

A 5m by 10m rectangle is 50m². The finished price for that area will depend on excavations, the sub-base, restraints, laying pattern and drainage.

Typical installed block paving costs

Compact£2,40020m²
Double parking£5,00050m²
Large£8,000100m²

These UK-wide 2026 examples describe ordinary installations, not a guaranteed square-metre tariff. Check what each contractor includes before treating it as a like-for-like comparison.

The five elements worth checking

1. Dig-out and disposal

The depth and condition of the old surface matter. Removing spoil and getting machinery onto the site can be significant work.

2. Firm sub-base

Correct compaction helps avoid dips and movement. Ask for the base specification rather than assuming all quotations provide the same construction.

3. Blocks and laying pattern

Standard concrete blocks often cost less than speciality finishes. Herringbone, basket weave and curved areas can require different labour and cutting.

4. Edge restraints

Good edges hold the paving in place. They should be specified, even when decorative kerbs are optional.

5. Drainage and finishing

Falls, channel drains, jointing sand and final clean-up should be clear in the written scope.

Is block paving a sensible choice?

It is a strong option if you want a patterned surface and the flexibility to lift and replace individual blocks after localised damage. The trade-off is that joints need occasional maintenance, and poor installation can lead to settlement.

Compare the look and maintenance with resin-bound costs and tarmac prices before deciding.

Common questions

Does the calculator quote for block paving?

It creates an independent UK budgeting estimate using your material choice, approximate or measured area, and selected extras. It does not arrange a contractor quotation.

Is a block paving driveway cheaper than resin?

On the cited national 50m² benchmarks, block paving is roughly £5,000 and resin-bound around £6,000. Access, base construction and design can change either price.
