What will a gravel driveway cost?

Gravel is often the most affordable driveway surface to install. Getting it right still depends on the compacted base, stone selection and edges that stop the gravel spreading.

Budget examples for different gravel driveway sizes

For a typical installed gravel drive, a 20m² example is approximately £1,400, a 50m² example around £3,000 and a 100m² driveway around £5,000. These national examples include ordinary installation work, but not every possible site defect or drainage scheme.

Gravel can be attractive on large driveways because its surface material costs less than block paving or resin. The overall saving depends on how much digging, levelling and disposal the site needs.

Choose stones for use, not just colour

Angular aggregate tends to interlock more effectively than very rounded pebbles under vehicle tyres. The right grading, depth and compaction will depend on the installation system and vehicle loads.

Check how easy the surface will be for pushchairs, bikes, bins and visitors with mobility needs. Very loose or deep stone can make access difficult.

Don't skip the boundaries

Without an edge restraint, gravel migrates onto footpaths and lawns. Timber, blocks, metal or concrete edges offer different appearances and lifespans. Ask whether borders are included in the main quote.

Driveways on noticeable slopes need particular care: tyres and rainfall can shift loose material downhill.

What about weed membranes?

A suitable geotextile can help separate layers and limit contamination in some designs, but it does not replace a load-bearing sub-base. Seeds can still settle in dirt on top and germinate over time. Good construction and periodic maintenance matter more than any single sheet of fabric.

Consider drainage before choosing gravel

Loose gravel is generally permeable, although water must still have somewhere suitable to drain. Saturated ground, clay soils or poor levels can require additional design. The front-garden drainage rules in England are worth checking early.

What to ask the installer

  • What depth of excavation and sub-base is included?
  • Which stone size and grade is specified?
  • Will the surface be restrained at the garden and pavement edges?
  • How will drainage work in heavy rainfall?
  • Is access suitable for regular vehicles and pedestrian use?

Once you've chosen a likely area, build a gravel driveway budget before obtaining written quotations.

Common questions

Is gravel the cheapest driveway surface?

It is generally the least expensive of the four materials modelled by our calculator, based on the cited national installation examples. Preparation can change the outcome.

Does a gravel driveway need maintenance?

Yes. Expect occasional raking, replacing escaped stones, cleaning edges and controlling weeds that establish on the surface.
