Choose the surface for the job
Well-designed block paving can provide a patterned finish; tarmac is smooth; loose gravel on a steep drive can migrate under tyres. Ask a competent installer which construction suits your gradient.
Planning a driveway with changing levels
Measure the length and width, but also note the fall from pavement to house. A sloping plot may need more thought about retaining edges, slip resistance and where runoff travels than a level example of the same area.
A 50m² price comparison
| Material | Example installed cost | Budget point |
|---|---|---|
| Gravel | £3,000 | Loose-stone upkeep |
| Tarmac | £4,500 | Simple smooth finish |
| Block paving | £5,000 | Jointed patterned finish |
| Resin bound | £6,000 | Compatible base required |
These are UK-wide 2026 installed-price examples, not independently surveyed Leeds rates. Your actual price depends on the measured area, groundworks, access, drainage and the contractor’s specification. Our calculator does not apply an unverified postcode multiplier.
The questions a useful quote answers
Ask the contractor to explain the finished levels, any retaining work and the drainage route. These should not be hidden inside a vague “all-inclusive” surface price. Entrance changes may require highway approval.
For houses in England, permeability and the route taken by runoff can affect whether planning permission is needed for a front driveway. England: paving your front garden.
One question to ask a Leeds contractor
Take photographs of standing water and existing steps before requesting quotes so every contractor prices the same problem.
Keep the specification in writing, including excavation, waste, drainage, edges and VAT treatment. Our calculator is an independent budgeting tool and does not recommend or arrange local contractors.
Common questions
Does the calculator use a special Leeds price?
No. It uses UK-wide published benchmarks and your selected driveway area, material and work details. It does not claim to know a verified local contractor rate.
Do I need permission to change my driveway here?
That depends on the property, surface, drainage, entrance and England planning/highway rules. Check with the relevant authority before assuming permission.
