The installation stages that affect your quote
Site survey and measurements
The installer should check finished levels, thresholds, access, current ground conditions and where surface water will drain. An assumed area can change once the site is measured.
Excavation and disposal
Existing paving, soil or unsuitable material may need removal. Clarify the depth of dig-out, waste transport and whether access for machinery is possible.
Sub-base construction
Layers need to suit the chosen surface and vehicles. Inadequate compaction can lead to movement, rutting or cracking despite an attractive top finish.
Surfacing, edges and drainage
Agree the specific material, thickness, edging, falls, channels and any separate soakaway works. A dropped kerb requires a distinct approval process and may be excluded.
How much might a 50m² driveway cost?
UK national examples for typical installed work are approximately £3,000 gravel, £4,500 tarmac, £5,000 block paving and £6,000 resin-bound. These already reflect ordinary installation activity. Do not automatically add a second full excavation charge to a benchmark without checking what is included: that can double-count the same work.
Our independent calculator builds a project-specific provisional range from the area, material, work type and selected extras. It uses UK-wide figures, not a hidden postcode multiplier.
Use an itemised quote checklist
- What is the exact measured area and finished level?
- Which existing material will be removed, and where does waste go?
- What base, surfacing material and layer thicknesses are specified?
- How is rainwater dealt with, including the outlet?
- Are edging, access steps, VAT and any permissions included?
- What guarantee, timetable and payment stages apply?
New driveway versus replacement
Making a driveway from a front garden is different from replacing a sound paved surface. Garden conversions may involve more digging, retaining works, drainage changes and access permissions. Replacements may require removal and rebuilding, but not always every element of the existing construction.
For changes to an existing driveway, see our resurfacing guide. If you are paving a front garden, check planning and dropped-kerb permissions.
Common questions
Are labour and groundwork included in typical online prices?
Often a published installed-price example includes normal installation work. The scope differs by source, so never add line items to a published total without checking the inclusions.
Do prices vary by postcode?
Contractors may price differently by location, but our calculator currently uses UK-wide benchmarks and does not apply unverified postcode multipliers.
