Cost comparison without a guessed postcode premium
Begin with a measured area and the four surface types in our calculator. The tool uses UK-wide example prices: it does not claim that a Glasgow contractor will charge a specific local tariff. Request itemised quotes once the scope is settled.
Lower initial budget
On published 50m² UK examples, gravel is around £3,000 and tarmac £4,500. Both still need proper ground preparation and drainage.
Decorative choices
The same national comparison puts block paving around £5,000 and resin bound £6,000. Patterns, colours, edges and suitable foundations affect real quotes.
These are UK-wide 2026 installed-price examples, not independently surveyed Glasgow rates. Your actual price depends on the measured area, groundworks, access, drainage and the contractor’s specification. Our calculator does not apply an unverified postcode multiplier.
Do not apply England rules automatically
Scottish permitted-development rules and roads-authority requirements are not identical to the England front-garden guidance. Check current Scottish Government, council and roads-authority information before paving or altering access.
Check Scottish rules for hard surfaces and roads authority approval; do not apply the England front-garden test automatically. Scotland: hard surfaces around your home.
Materials and colder-weather care
Surface water and suitable foundations deserve attention wherever freeze–thaw weather is possible. Ask installers about the proposed base and maintenance for the chosen finish rather than assuming every material will perform alike.
One question to ask a Glasgow contractor
Ask which authority must approve any pavement crossing and whether drainage or ground conditions require separate design.
Keep the specification in writing, including excavation, waste, drainage, edges and VAT treatment. Our calculator is an independent budgeting tool and does not recommend or arrange local contractors.
Common questions
Does the calculator use a special Glasgow price?
No. It uses UK-wide published benchmarks and your selected driveway area, material and work details. It does not claim to know a verified local contractor rate.
Do I need permission to change my driveway here?
That depends on the property, surface, drainage, entrance and Scotland planning/highway rules. Check with the relevant authority before assuming permission.
