Where the extra installation work comes from
A permeable paving system typically uses specified jointing aggregate and open-graded foundation layers that store and move water. The depth, ground permeability, intended vehicle load and overflow route require design. An apparently cheap quote that uses ordinary dense layers may not deliver the permeability being advertised.

Surface blocks and joints
Compatible blocks and the correct joint fill allow rainwater into the construction. Ordinary jointing sand is not automatically suitable.
Bedding and sub-base
The structure needs to support traffic and handle water. The required aggregate gradings and depth depend on the selected system and site conditions.
Ground below and overflow
Where underlying soil cannot infiltrate water quickly enough, a designed outlet or alternative drainage solution may be necessary.
Do not assume all block paving qualifies as permeable
Planning rules for front gardens depend on the location and the actual drainage arrangement. For houses in England, see the driveway planning guide. Scotland and Wales use their own rules.
What can the calculator estimate?
Our block-paving selection gives a general installation budget, not a separately designed permeable-system price. Obtain an itemised estimate for the full drainage construction. You can still compare ordinary paving, gravel, resin bound and tarmac as alternative surface budgets.
Common questions
Is permeable block paving the same as normal block paving?
No. Permeable installations require suitable units or joint arrangements and designed bedding/sub-base materials that manage water.
Can I use the standard block paving estimate?
Only as a broad comparison. The calculator does not separately design or price a specialist permeable paving system.
