Modern looks by material
| Surface | Modern design idea | Remember |
|---|---|---|
| Block paving | Charcoal herringbone with one simple border | Joint maintenance |
| Resin bound | Warm neutral stone with a fine contrasting edge | Base and system design |
| Tarmac | Dark smooth parking area and clean paved edging | Surface repairs can show |
| Gravel | Grey angular stone restrained by steel or block edges | Migration and raking |
Planting as part of the design
Low borders, tough grasses and a retained tree can soften large areas. Avoid root-prone planting directly against structures without advice.
Lighting without clutter
Simple exterior lighting can improve the route to the door. Agree cable routes before the surface is finished, and have electrical work specified by a competent installer.
Dark materials can look different in the sun
Ask to view real installed finishes in daylight and shade. A sample tile cannot fully show weathering, stains, the texture under wet tyres or how a large expanse sits beside brickwork.
Budget for the actual design
Surface price is only one part of a project with borders, level changes and drainage. Start with a measured area using our calculator, then price decorative extras separately.
Common questions
Are dark grey driveways more expensive?
Colour alone does not determine the cost. Specialist blocks, aggregates or edging can add to it, so compare the exact product and installation scope.
What is the most modern-looking driveway?
That is a style judgement. Continuous resin, carefully detailed block paving and restrained gravel can all suit a contemporary UK house.
