Budget without assuming an invented Cardiff rate
Our calculator uses national benchmark figures. It is useful for comparing a 20m² or 50m² surface, but it does not make a verified Cardiff-specific claim about labour or material prices.
Lower initial budget
On published 50m² UK examples, gravel is around £3,000 and tarmac £4,500. Both still need proper ground preparation and drainage.
Decorative choices
The same national comparison puts block paving around £5,000 and resin bound £6,000. Patterns, colours, edges and suitable foundations affect real quotes.
These are UK-wide 2026 installed-price examples, not independently surveyed Cardiff rates. Your actual price depends on the measured area, groundworks, access, drainage and the contractor’s specification. Our calculator does not apply an unverified postcode multiplier.
Check Welsh rules and the local road authority
Welsh permitted-development and surface-water provisions may differ from those in England. For a new crossing or major front-garden change, seek current advice from Cardiff Council and the relevant highways or planning team.
Use the Welsh Government’s front-garden surface guidance and contact the appropriate local planning and highway authorities. Wales: patios and driveways.
Include a clear walking route
Whether you choose block paving, resin bound, tarmac or gravel, set aside safe pedestrian access and plan drainage first. The visual finish can follow those decisions.
One question to ask a Cardiff contractor
Ask which side of the quote covers drainage and which permissions you must obtain separately.
Keep the specification in writing, including excavation, waste, drainage, edges and VAT treatment. Our calculator is an independent budgeting tool and does not recommend or arrange local contractors.
Common questions
Does the calculator use a special Cardiff price?
No. It uses UK-wide published benchmarks and your selected driveway area, material and work details. It does not claim to know a verified local contractor rate.
Do I need permission to change my driveway here?
That depends on the property, surface, drainage, entrance and Wales planning/highway rules. Check with the relevant authority before assuming permission.
