Budgeting for a compact London frontage
Measure the parking bay, the route to the front door and the entrance separately. Where storage, steps or boundary walls take up space, the paved footprint may be smaller than the front garden. A very small project can still involve fixed machinery and waste-removal costs.
A 50m² price comparison
| Material | Example installed cost | Budget point |
|---|---|---|
| Gravel | £3,000 | Loose-stone upkeep |
| Tarmac | £4,500 | Simple smooth finish |
| Block paving | £5,000 | Jointed patterned finish |

Different boroughs, different highway contacts
For a new or altered vehicle crossing, check the rules with the relevant London borough or highway authority. A driveway surface and permission to cross the pavement are separate matters. Restricted working or delivery access should be described in each installer quote.
For houses in England, permeability and the route taken by runoff can affect whether planning permission is needed for a front driveway. England: paving your front garden.
A layout worth considering
A single flush pedestrian route next to a compact block-paved parking bay can keep access straightforward. If a permeable construction is suitable, compare the complete drainage build-up rather than only the surface material.
One question to ask a London contractor
Ask whether delivery vehicles can stop safely, where excavated material will be loaded and whether any entrance alteration is included.
Keep the specification in writing, including excavation, waste, drainage, edges and VAT treatment. Our calculator is an independent budgeting tool and does not recommend or arrange local contractors.
Common questions
Does the calculator use a special London price?
No. It uses UK-wide published benchmarks and your selected driveway area, material and work details. It does not claim to know a verified local contractor rate.
Do I need permission to change my driveway here?
That depends on the property, surface, drainage, entrance and England planning/highway rules. Check with the relevant authority before assuming permission.
